Meerkat

Meerkat

Meerkats may look like prairie dogs on a diet, but they are mongoose relatives. You might see them digging in the dirt for insects to eat or adding on to their extensive underground burrows. These little carnivores live and work together in a group called a gang or a mob for the common good. They may help by caring for youngsters or keeping a lookout for danger.

Can you find a meerkat on lookout duty? Balancing on hind legs, a meerkat sentry doesn't miss much. If it spots trouble, the lookout alerts the others, and they all dash into the safety of the burrows. Meerkats look comical when relaxing, sitting on their backside, front paws draped across their stomach. All that's missing are reclining chairs, a bag of chips, and the game on television!

See what our meerkats are up to as you stroll through Safari Base Camp.
